Chicago White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar has use of his extremities and is responding to questions and commands after undergoing brain surgery, the MLB team announced on Monday.

Farquhar suffered a ruptured aneurysm which caused a brain haemorrhage after he passed out in dugout after pitching in the sixth inning of the White Sox's loss to the Houston Astros on Friday.

The 31-year-old was transported to Rush University Medical Center and the White Sox said on Monday that he is expected to remain in the hospital's neurological intensive care unit "for the next few weeks."

Farquhar's condition remains critical but he is considered neurologically stable and has been speaking to doctors and his family.

"We are just very happy that he's trending in the right direction," said manager Rick Renteria.

"To know that he's able to move and speak, to know that his family is there, he knows everybody cares for him. We are going in the right direction and very guardedly optimistic about the outcome."

The White Sox said fans wishing to send get-well messages to Farquhar can do so through the team.
