Daryl Impey became the first South African to win the Tour Down Under, defending his overall lead during Sunday's final stage.

Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) claimed the crown in Adelaide as Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) made it two stage wins.

Greipel edged Impey's team-mate Caleb Ewan in a thrilling sprint finish on stage six.

While there were several breakaways during the 90-kilometre final stage, Impey's win was never in doubt as Mitchelton-Scott controlled the peloton.

"I'm thrilled," the 33-year-old said after his win, as Richie Porte (BMC Racing) and Tom-Jelte Slagter (Dimension Data) finished second and third respectively.

"Coming into the race, I didn't expect to win the race but sometimes the stars line up and everything goes well and according to plan.

"I worked really hard in the off-season so I'm happy to get this win."

Impey's win also ended a run of four straight victories by Australians at the Tour Down Under.

Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) won the sprint jersey, while Nicholas Dlamini (Dimension Data) was the king of the mountain.
