19 september 2018 10:38

The presidents of North and South Korea, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in, have confirmed the two countries will seek to jointly host the 2032 Summer Olympics.

At this year's Winter Games in the South Korean county of Pyeongchang, the two nations marched under a unified flag in the opening ceremony and fielded a combined women's ice hockey team.

Following summit talks in Pyongyang on Wednesday, presidents Kim and Moon announced further plans to promote reconciliation and harmony on the Korean peninsula through cooperation in sports.

American president Donald Trump welcomed the news on Twitter, writing: "North and South Korea will file a joint bid to host the 2032 Olympics. Very exciting!"

The next three Summer Games have already been awarded to Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles.

The Yonhap news agency reported that North and South Korea have also committed to working together in a bid to forming more unified teams at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and other international competitions.
