Demons off the mark at Giants´ expense

21 april 2013 12:01

Melbourne, who were bottom of the AFL ladder heading into the clash, were trailing by 19 points at three-quarter time, having been outplayed in the previous two terms, and were staring at an embarrassing defeat to the fledgling Giants.

But Melbourne looked like a completely different side after the final change as they romped to a 22.12 (144) to 15.13 (103) victory.

Michael Evans was the catalyst in the final stanza, as he helped himself to three goals to go with his 20 possessions, while Jeremy Howe (seven marks) also booted three of his career-high four goals after three-quarter time.

It was the Demons' first ever 12-goal quarter in their 116-year history.

Elsewhere, the Adelaide Crows bounced back to form following their loss to bitter rivals Port Adelaide last week with a 52-point win over the Western Bulldogs at a wet AAMI Stadium.

Patrick Dangerfield slotted four goals, including the 100th of his AFL career, as the Crows prevailed 12.8 (80) to 4.4 (28) over the disappointing Dogs in front of 24,684 patrons - Adelaide's second-smallest ever home crowd - who braved the wintry conditions.

And North Melbourne posted their first win of the season with a 63-point triumph over the Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium.

Former Sudanese refugee Majak Daw made his debut for the Kangaroos in the clash, and he made a flying start to the match when he out-leapt Niall McKeever to goal inside 60 seconds.

But his dream debut come crashing back to earth moments later when he was concussed in a head clash with team-mate Ben Cunnington, forcing him to be substituted out of the game.

Sam Gibson (30 disposals), Jack Ziebell (25) and Daniel Wells (24) helped set up the victory with fine first quarters, while Drew Petrie and Lindsay Thomas finished off some excellent work up forward and kicked four goals apiece.
