Riewoldt stars as Tigers roar

1 juni 2012 14:56

Billed as the match of the round, the encounter more than lived up to expectations as the lead changed five times in a thrilling final term, before the Tigers held on to win 18.13 (121) to 16.17 (113).

The Saints came from 20 points down at the seven-minute mark of the last quarter to storm into the lead with four goals in eight minutes.

The Tigers of old would have simply laid down under the onslaught but Damien Hardwick's men are made of sterner stuff these days and they responded through Riewoldt, who found himself on his own at the back of the pack to kick three of the next four goals.

They may have thrashed Hawthorn by 62 points last week, but anyone thinking that result was simply a flash in the pan may have to think again as Richmond surged to win by eight points - a victory that would rank among the best the club has achieved in the last five years.

Riewoldt was the first-half hero, marking strongly and booting five goals as the Tigers led by two points at the main change.

But with the pressure lifting in the third quarter, it was Richmond who made the break, with fleet-footed Robin Nahas booting his two goals for the night to help the Tigers out to a 20-point advantage 13 minutes into the term.

Despite coming off three consecutive six-day breaks, the Saints never sought excuses and continued to pepper the goals, but seven straight behinds - four of those rushed - meant St Kilda simply did not get reward for effort.

When the Tigers responded by booting the first two goals of the final term, the lead had ballooned out to 20 points again and the result appeared a foregone conclusion.

But St Kilda fought back again, kicking four goals in the next eight minutes to take the lead for the first time since the 30th minute of the second term.

Riewoldt then kicked another two goals to seal the win for Richmond, sending the Tigers' fans into raptures.
