IndyCar driver Wickens taken to hospital after crash

19 augustus 2018 23:21

Robert Wickens was taken to hospital after a multi-car crash which halted the IndyCar Series event at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Canadian driver Wickens was attempting to pass Ryan Hunter-Reay when the two collided.

The contact caused Hunter-Reay to go into the wall, while Wickens' car went airborne and slammed into the wall before spinning out on the track.

James Hinchcliffe, Takuma Sato and Pietro Fittipaldi were also involved in the crash and multiple drivers were injured.

"Part of the issue is we have five drivers in here in the aftermath of that crash," IndyCar vice-president of communications Curt Cavin said.

"Robert Wickens was awake and alert when he came here and he's being transported to LeHigh Valley Cedarcrest hospital in Allentown for evaluation. We'll have more updates later."
