Inglis training Johnston at full-back as return remains unclear

There is still no timeframe on Greg Inglis' return and the South Sydney Rabbitohs captain has been coaching Alex Johnston to fill in for him at full-back should he not be ready for the new NRL season.

Inglis has been out of action since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the opening match of the previous campaign and entered a mental health rehabilitation facility last May.

Rabbitohs coach Anthony Seibold will wait until the 31-year-old declares himself ready before sending him back into the fray, though when that will be remains unclear.

"Each and every day, I want to continue for round one but when it comes it comes," said Inglis.

"Whether I play Charity Shield, round one or round four, there's no timeframe on it.

"Seibs [Seibold] has left it to me, he wants me to play but he's more about making sure the person's right first before the footballer.

"I just want to get back playing footy. Whether it is centre or whether it is full-back, we still haven't made that decision yet. It is pretty much like the timeframe for when I come back.

"It's pretty exciting because throughout the pre-season I've usually been training one day on and a couple of days off.

"Last week was my first full week finishing training. Backing up training is really rewarding because I know I'm getting closer. The confidence is building back up."

Should Inglis not feel suitably prepared to don the number one shirt for the opening match of the new season against New Zealand Warriors on March 10, he has been helping ensure Johnston will be ready to cover for him.

"As the older and more experienced players, we need to help the young guys coming through," Inglis said of the 23-year-old.

"I love having AJ out the back. He's obviously quick and very smart and the more I can teach him about what to look out for in the full-back role, the more better off we're going to be as a team."
