WATCH: NRL stars honour Dally M Medal winner Tuivasa-Sheck with impromptu haka

The 2018 Dally M Medal was awarded to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who was honoured by some of his fellow NRL stars with an impromptu haka.

Full-back Tuivasa-Sheck became the first New Zealand Warrior to win the prize, handed to the competition's player of the season.

Tuivasa-Sheck helped the Warriors to their first Finals appearance in seven years with three tries, eight assists, 13 line breaks and 112 tackle breaks, while he was second in terms of metres made on kick returns.

After the 25-year-old took to the stage to receive his award, Warriors team-mates Issac Luke and Jazz Tevaga, as well as Canberra Raiders' Jordan Rapana, paid special tribute with a spontaneous haka at Wednesday's ceremony.

"This is crazy," said Tuivasa-Sheck, who follows in the footsteps of previous winners Cooper Cronk, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater and Cameron Smith.

"I remember the first time I came to these awards in 2013 and Cooper Cronk won the Dally M award and I was sitting there thinking 'man, it would be a dream to win this award', not knowing this day was even real or would ever come so I'm feeling truly blessed right now to be up here holding this trophy.

"There's so many people I'd like to thank, my family, mum and dad, you guys have been awesome, constant love and support, you always keep me in your prayers and keep me grounded which is what's most important.

"I want to thank my club, my team, to the coaching staff, the players, man you guys pushed me every day, even though we weren't going so well you guys were there and were buzzing and that's what I loved this year."

Newcastle Knights full-back Kalyn Ponga finished second in the voting, with half-back Luke Brooks from Wests Tigers rounding out the top three.
