Format:
12 teams, each plays the others twice - home and away - for a total of 22 games each, over 22 game weeks.

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2. play-off (only for deciding final stages participation); 3. total goal difference; 4. total goals scored; 5. points in head-to-head matches; 6. goal difference in hth matches; 7. goals scored in hth matches; 8. draw.

1-8 place: qualify for Final Stages


Apertura - Final Stages:
------------

Format:
8 teams contest the Apertura champion in a knockout format.

Quarter-finals:
Teams are paired according to their Apertura standings:
1st vs 8th;
2nd vs 7th;
3rd vs 6th;
4th vs 5th.
Winners are decided over two legs.
The better placed teams from the Apertura choose the hosting order.

Semi-finals:
Teams are paired according to their Apertura standings:
best placed vs worst placed;
2nd best placed vs 3rd best placed.
Winners are decided over two legs.
The better placed teams from the Apertura choose the hosting order.

Tie-breakers for the Semi-finals knockout matches:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. higher Apertura placing.

Final:
The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming Apertura champion.
Winner is decided over one leg with penalties if scire is level after regular time.
The match is played at a neutral venue.

Qualification for CONCACAF competitions:
Apertura champion: CONCACAF Champions League


Clausura:
------------

Format:

* - if any of the qualified teams is also to be relegated at the end of the season, it cannot play in the Clausura - Final Stages, and the 9th placed team in the Clausura table qualifies instead.

Relegation from the league:
Teams' records from the Apertura and Clausura are summed (a total of 44 games each) and a Summary Table is compiled.
12 place in the summary table: relegated to Segunda División

Summary Table order:
1. points won; 2. play-off (only for deciding relegation); 3. total goal difference; 4. total goals scored; 5. points in head-to-head matches; 6. goal difference in hth matches; 7. goals scored in hth matches; 8. draw.

Promotion to the league:
1 team from Segunda División
