Qualification:

68 teams from the 56 CAF member countries qualify for the competition.

The countries are ranked according to their performance in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup in the 5 seasons from 2012 to 2016 and a CAF 5-Year Ranking is compiled.

- 2 teams each from the countries, placed 1-12 in the CAF 5-Year Ranking (Egypt, Tunisia, Congo DR, Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Sudan, Côte d'Ivoire, Zambia, Congo, Mali and Nigeria);

- 1 team each from the remaining 44 countries.

59 teams enter the competition (Cape Verde, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Namibia, Reunion, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leoene and Somalia do not enter a team).


The participating teams are ranked according to their performance in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup in the 5 seasons from 2013 to 2017 and a CAF 5-Year Team Ranking is compiled.

The top 5 teams in the CAF 5-Year Team Ranking enter the competition directly at the 1st Round.



Qualifying Stage:

Format:

59 teams contest 8 places in the Group stage in a knockout format.


Preliminary Round:

52 teams are drawn into 26 pairs, with regional considerations taken into account.

Winners are decided over two legs.

Hosting is determined by the draw.


1st Round:

26 teams from the Preliminary Round and the 4 teams that enter the competition at this stage are drawn into 15 pairs, with regional considerations taken into account.

Teams are allocated into 2 pots as follows:

Pot 1: the teams that enter the competition at this stage;

Pot 2: the winners from the Preliminary Round.

Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2 until Pot 1 is emptied.

The remaining Pot 2 teams are drawn against each other.

Winners are decided over two legs.

Hosting is determined by the draw.


Tie-breakers for the knockout matches over two legs:

1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals 3. penalties.


Qualification for the Group stage:

the sixteen 2nd Round winners: qualify for the Group stage


Qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup:

the sixteen 2nd Round losers: enter the CAF Confederation Cup Play-offs



Group stage:

Format:

16 teams are drawn into 4 groups of 4 teams each (Groups A-D).

Teams are distributed into 2 pots, based on their CAF 5-Year Team Ranking:

Pot 1: the 4 teams with best CAF 5-Year Team Ranking;

Pot 2: the other 12 teams.

Each group consists of one team from Pot 1 and three teams from Pot 2.

Each team plays the others from its own group twice - home and away - for a total of 6 games each, over 6 game weeks.



Scoring points:

3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.



Table order:

1. points won; 2. points in head-to-head matches; 3. goal difference in hth matches; 4. away goals in hth matches; 5. total goal difference; 6. total goals scored.



Qualification for the Knockout stage:

1-2 place of each group: qualify for the Knockout stage




Knockout stage:

Format:

8 teams contest the CAF Champions League winner in a knockout format.


Quarter-finals:

8 teams are drawn into 4 pairs.

Teams are distributed into 2 pots:

Pot 1: the 4 group winners;

Pot 2: the 4 group runners-up.

Teams from Pot 1 are drawn against teams from Pot 2.

Winners are decided over two legs.

The group winners host the second legs.


Semi-finals:

4 teams are drawn into 2 pairs.

Winners are decided over two legs.

Hosting is determined by draw.


Final:

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming CAF Champions League winner.

Winner is decided over two legs.

Hosting is determined by draw.
